In operations coordinated by the CBI, two fugitives dealing with Interpol Purple Discover and wished in separate instances in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat have been arrested after their return from the US and Thailand on Wednesday, officers mentioned.
Janarthanan Sundaram, accused of siphoning over Rs 87 crore of traders’ cash by way of his ponzi scheme, was deported from Bangkok to India and brought into custody on the Kolkata airport by the Tamil Nadu Police, they mentioned.
He was wished by the Financial Offence Wing (EOW) of Tamil Nadu Police for the offences of legal conspiracy, legal breach of belief, dishonest, default in reimbursement of deposits/curiosity and offences dedicated below Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019, amongst others.
“The CBI on request of Tamil Nadu Police received Purple Discover issued in opposition to the topic from Interpol on June 21, 2023,” a CBI spokesperson mentioned.
Sundaram who travelled to Bangkok on January 28, 2025 was denied entry on the idea of Purple Discover, the company mentioned.
The CBI, which is nodal physique of India on all issues associated to Interpol, coordinated with the worldwide physique, Indian Embassy in Bangkok and Kolkata airport authorities for his return.
“He was deported to India from Bangkok, Thailand,” the spokesperson mentioned.
On arrival on the Kolkata airport on Wednesday, he was detained and later handed over to Tamil Nadu Police staff, which arrived on the airport from Chennai to safe his custody, the officers mentioned.
Within the second operation, the World Operations Centre of the CBI which handles such issues carefully coordinated with the Gujarat Police and immigration authorities at Ahmedabad airport for return of Virendrabhai Manibhai Patel wished for 20 years in a case of dishonest, forgery and legal conspiracy.
Patel, director of Charotar Nagrik Sahakari Financial institution, Anand, was wished in a case of fraud of Rs 77 crore registered by the Gujarat Police in 2002.
A Purple Discover was issued in opposition to him by the Interpol on March 3, 2004, the CBI spokesperson mentioned in an announcement.
“On the idea of the Purple Discover, Patel was detected at Ahmedabad airport whereas on arrival from the US on January 29, 2025 and was detained and later handed over to the Gujarat Police staff,” it mentioned.
The Gujarat Police staff arrived on the Ahmedabad airport to safe his custody, it added.
